A police cordon on Wednesday prevented a group of some 70-80 demonstrators from reaching the “Piraeus Theoxenia” Hotel in the port of Piraeus, where Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos was scheduled to make a speech at 19:00. According to sources, some protestors threw stones at the police, who replied with the use of tear gas.
Protestors remain gathered in surrounding roads, while the fire brigade was called to put out a fire set in a garbage bin on Iroon Politechniou. A strong police force is also stationed in the area.
The event where Tsakalotos was to speak was moved from the original venue to the hotel at the last minute on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Olympiacos FC supporters were calling for a protest rally on Korai Square in Piraeus via social media.
