Stathakis: Greece will complete energy planning in 2018

Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis presented on Thursday parts of Greece’s energy policy with a focus on power issues relating to the country’s northern Aegean islands.

“The European Union’s target is that by 2030 there will be a 30 percent reduction in energy consumption and out of the total energy produced, 30 percent should come from renewable energy sources. In 2018, the country’s energy planning will have been completed and will be submitted in writing to the European Union. The section with the islands is a problem of central importance. The way in which today the islands produce energy costs 700 million euros per year, out of a total cost of 5.6 billion euros – a cost that is not only financial but also environmental,” said the minister, addressing the Regional Conference for the North Aegean on Lesvos.
